In a ranting mood. This is what doing an English degree and wanting to teach does to you.
Can someone please explain to me why it is so hard for an English graduate to get a job? Don’t even get me started on how hard it is to get onto a secondary English PGCE. The university I’ve applied for (and…
Reblogging this ‘cause I ran out of space on the reply…
They cut a whole load of university places, then complain there’s a shortage of teahers?! All the courses I know of are oversubscribed, if they want more teachers, OFFER MORE PLACES. Don’t give up hope tho, it’s an alright course/profession in the sense that if you don’t make it first time, you can always try again whilst gaining more experience. Have your experience-searching emails been for paid/unpaid work? It may be different for secondary (I’m starting my primary PGCE in September) but a lot of schools should be happy about having some free help for a few weeks, it seems strange that they haven’t even got back to you!
I’ve tried everything. It just seems that with secondary schools they have that many people after experience it comes down to who you know. It’s stupid. I’ve said I want to volunteer but they keep saying they don’t have room for me. Have you seen the actual document that shows how many places unis have for the different courses? It’s here: http://jsavage.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Annex-2-mainstream-allocations-1213.pdf The ones that are shaded are the courses that are at risk of being cut all together next year. It seems to me like they want to push people into doing Teach First and GTPs. Primary seems to be okay but secondary is a right mess.
It annoys me that they’re thinking of changing the grades so that only people with a 2.1 or above can apply. I know people with 2.2s who would make better teachers than people with 1sts. It shouldn’t come down to grades that much. In my opinion you either have the ability to teach or you don’t. I can see the theory behind wanting people with higher grades but in practice I don’t think it will work.
I could rant about this all day believe me. It is doing my head in.

Can someone please explain to me why it is so hard for an English graduate to get a job? Don’t even get me started on how hard it is to get onto a secondary English PGCE. The university I’ve applied for (and waiting on to find out how I’ve done) only has 8 places for god’s sake. I’m just so pissed off at the moment. I’ve given up all my other dreams to chase after this one. I have worked so hard for the past 5 years through my A Levels and my degree. I’m starting to feel like it was all pointless now.
What’s pissing me off the most is the elitism and the blatant sexism in the education sector these days. I’m not a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics) graduate so my degree is seen as pretty much worthless when it comes to teaching. I’m not in a priority subject so the funding has been cut and so have the places. They say there’s no need for English teachers at the moment but in the county I live there is a shortage of English teachers. Can someone please explain this to me? Instead of cutting the English places throughout the country they should allocate the places to areas that need them.
I have tried gaining experience in secondary schools but the majority of them have just ignored my emails and calls. I have experience working in a similar role to a mentor for two years. I’ve looked at LSA positions but I need exp in a similar role or qualifications that require me to have exp to apply for. I’ve only found one local institution that offers the LSA level 2 course to people without experience. Yet I know three male secondary school LSAs who got their jobs without any experience, qualifications or even a degree. One of them got the job quite recently at a school I applied to and was ignored by. They told him they wanted ‘a good male role model for the students.’ The one female LSA I know, who does have qualifications, told me not to bother applying to any jobs until I’d managed to get a qualification because I’m not male. She said it was very unlikely they’d even accept me as a volunteer.
I honestly don’t know where I’m going to be in four months time and that really pisses me off.
So instead of doing work on my dissertation I’ve been watching X Japan videos. I regret nothing. I was there and it was the best gig I’ve ever been too. The performances these guys give are just amazing and I cannot wait to go and see them again. I just hope I get the chance. I’d love to see them play the Tokyo Dome one day.
Just watch this.
You can thank me later.
I’m in love with this video. I might be a Kindle owner (for convenience) but I agree there’s just nothing like a real book.
Come on let’s all get together and show him some support.

If you had the original Neverwinter Nights and all the Baldur’s gate stuff on steam, I would literally give you all my money. I love those games that. much.
In other news, apparently I have been a Bioware fangirl since the beginning of my gaming career. Without even knowing it. Wheeeeeeee.
